Armenia Karabagh Travel Question
Posted: Mon April 23, 2007 04:55 PM UTC
I think I will be heading off to Karabagh in the middle of May and answers to the following questions will be greatly appreciated:

1. My understanding is that there is no visa requirement for the CIS citizens. Please confirm
2. When looking on the map of Karabagh there is a road that goes there one from the South through Lachin and the one from the North that ends up ultimately at Sevan. Please let me know about this upper road more in details: is it working? is it paved? is it safe? How long it will take to get there say from Mardakert to Sevan?

Frankly I don't know if there is a way from Sevan to Karabakh. People go there through Syunik and Lachin and it takes around 8-9 hours by car from Yerevan.

you may need to get a visa to Karabagh (unless you are visiting Karabagh with the official invitation of Karabagh Goverment or President). as far as I know only the citizens of Armenia don't need a visa. check www.nkr.am for more info. i guess they have some email addresses where you can get a more precise info on visas and travel.

you can get to Karabagh only though Berdzor (former Lachin). once you are in Yerevan, you'd rather check with the Karabagh embassy here where you can travel on your own in Karabagh. As there is no peace agreement yet, some parts of the country may be off limits for tourists.
