| Brest | Vlasovtse or Wlasowce Posted: Mon April 23, 2007 10:50 AM UTC
I have just found out my father was born in Wlasowce. He was Polish. I would like to visit in 2008. Many web sites say it is in Ukraine others in Belarus. Please help , does anyone know of this village and how easily could I travel from the UK to it.

Hi!
The village of Vlasovtsy (or, as you write, probably, in Polish, Wlasowce) is situated in Belarus: Brest region (oblast), Ivatsevichi district (rayon), Zhitlin rural soviet (selsky sovet). From 1921 till 1939 Belarus was split into two parts, and through those years the western part was incorporated into Poland. I'm not sure about a village with the same name in Ukraine, but talking about Ukraine, the word "vlasovtsy" is attributed to the people of the military regiments, which existed on the Ukranian territory at the time of WWII and were under command of the Soviet General Andrey Vlasov, who betrayed his country, came onto the Natzi side and fought against the Soviet Army. If you decide to visit the Belarusian village Vlasovtsy, you can fly to Minsk (the Belarusian capital) from the UK, then hire a car to Vlasovtsy (250-300 km from Minsk), or take a train/a bus from Minsk to Ivatsevichy, and hire a car there to get to Vlasovtsy. Make sure you have a valid Belarusian visa. If you have any additional questions, I'd be glad to help if I can. Good luck!

Thanks for so much information. I was really looking forward to visiting Poland, but having discovered Vlasovtse is now in Belarus I am feeling unsure.

Hi!
Why are you unsure about visiting Belarus? Do you feel uncomfortable about visa? Actually it's not so difficult to get it if you start the procedure beforehand. Belarus is a nice country and very safe. Come and see everything with your own eyes! Good luck! Grivdar
