It is possible to be invited to Bhutan by a Bhutanese friend. But your Bhutanese friend must have some connection to the kingdom which means, he might be working in the government etc and your visit must be stated not for leisure purpose. You'll be required to fill up a form with ur particulars. When I was invited, I initially disclose my trip is for leisure and my visa was rejected. Later I changed to providing consultation and it was approved. But I have to attached a company's letterhead stating that I went to Bhutan as a representative of the company to provide consultation. It was approved and I went to Bhutan without having to pay any fee except entrance visa fee US 20.
Hope this info can help u.

well its not pity they don't wont it to be like Nepal exploited and over crowded . they just have made it clean and less crowded thus by having quality tourist rather then quantity tourist . In a way it has protected and made more interesting . if you have a friend do ask him and visit then you shall get the difference .
or else head toward sikkim its quite similiar and cheap . sikkim , ladhak and bhutan are quite similiar .
