Hello, I plan to take a train from Salzburg to Munich and am wondering if it would be better to stop in Prien and go solo to Herrenchiemsee or to take a commercial tour there from either Salzburg or Munich. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best way to see Ludwig's island castle? Thank you in advance. Judy

It`s absolutely easy to take the boat from Priem to Herrenchiemsee. You don`t need an arranged tour, except you are interested in having some explanations during the ride.

Át the landing stage of the isle of Herrenchiemsee you can take a horse-carriage to the castle. (15 minute ride) Or you can go by feet directly to the castle. The garden in front the castle is really worth to visit, great fountains with very nice details. I`ll have pictures of it on my hompage in the next few days.

Inside the castle there are guided tours, you cannot visit the interesting rooms alone. They are really good organized, all languages are spoken.

I wish you a very nice trip to Herrenchiemsee. I have been there in May, it was wonderful.

Bye, bye

If you want to enter the palace you have to take a tour, but it is worth it! Prien is on the railroad line Munich-Salzburg and all trains stop there, since it is the biggest town on Chiemsee. Just follow all the tourists, once you are in Prien - there are huge masses going to the palace!
