Probably - by train via Ljubljana. We did Ljubljana-Zagreb and back by train, other travellers got to Ljubljana from Trieste by train.

Your children will spend the whole day in a smelly train....Venedig ( Venezia) / Trieste is 2 hours .... Trieste - Laibach (Lubiana) is 3 hours. I guess Agram (Zagabria) - Laibach is 3 hours or more. We can say Zagabria/Venezia is 8 hours . I don't think your children will be particularly happy.
