| Atlanta | Fly Drive - Southern States of America Posted: Tue April 17, 2007 07:40 PM UTC
Hi
I've got flights and a jeep booked in and out of ATL for two weeks in July / August and I'm trying to find "must not miss" places to visit in Georgia, Tenesee, Louisiana and elsewhere in the Southern States. Conversely if there are places to avoid that would be useful too! We love music of all types and are keen to see Historical sites and National Parks. We like a ball game when we can as well. We typically cover 1500 miles round trip - and would be really grateful for ideas. I appreciate any ideas you have. Best regards Mike UK |

The Smokey Mountains and the Smokey Mountains National Park are not to be missed in North Carolina and Tennessee.
If you really want to see the South, try to go as many miles as you can OFF the interstate highway system. If you love music I guess you should keep going west and see Nashville and Memphis.Might as well see the mighty Mississippi, then head south. Southern Louisana has it own culture, you could start in Lafayette and work your way down to New Orleans, seeing and eating lots of good stuff. The South is great, full of wonderful people and great traditions.

Hi Donato
Thanks for this good advice. One query; my daughter is 20 [almost 21] - is she OK to go to music clubs / bars Etc with us, so long as she doesn't drink alcohol? ...... rules are very different to the UK! Thanks Mike

Every state and county can have different liquor laws. There are many dry(no alcohol) counties in the south.
Generally, places that serve food will admit people under 21, while pure bars won't. In Florida, minors can be in bars, but seated at a table not the bar itself, at least in Miami-Dade county. I don't think it will be a problem for you or your daughter, especially in places with live music. For a major league baseball game you will probably be limited to the Atlanta Braves. You can get tickets at ticketmaster.com. But for a real inexpensive look at americana you can see a minor league baseball game. You can see one in Ashville, North Carolina; Macon, Georgia; Nashville, TN; Knoxville, TN and probably lots of other places in the South. Those are cities where I have seen games. Asheville is a very nice small city on the edge of the Smokies. There you can see the Ashville Tourists. There are contests between most innings at minor league games, I won $500.00 at a Tourist's game once. 2nd greatest day of my life. The trip sounds fun, stay off the interstate highway and you will really see lots of great stuff.

Your daughter will not have any trouble getting into the bars/honkey tonks in downtown Nashville. I've seen very young children in many of them.
