| Kochi | 4 to 5 days in Kerala Posted: Mon April 16, 2007 06:01 PM UTC
We (my wife and I) are plannig a trip to India and would like to stay some days at Kerala. We are delighted on what we read about back waters and house boats.
It seems that Cochin should be the entry/exit place. 1) Taking into account on what we read, Kumarakom should be our destination, but we received also advise on Aleppey. We are wondering if visiting the two places would add something special regarding staying at only one city. 2) How (or where) we select and make reservation for a house boat? 3) Taking any other boat trip adds something to the house boat experience? 4) if our trip is in october/november, would we have any chance to make any ayurveda experience? 5) We would like also to go to Lakshadweep Islands and we wonder which company make the flights in order to check prices. Perhaps there are also some ship to the Islands |

kerala is a great place - and you are right cochin is a good in and out - but isn't a particularly good place to stay.
i stayed for 3 nights in varkala and would recomment it unreservedly. http://www.varkalaonline.com/ i organised a house boat through these guys - had to make a bank transfer to a western union account - it was all fine http://www.houseboatskerala.net/reservation.htm seems like they take credit cards now.

Cochin can be one of the entry points but more better would be Trivandrum (Tvm), the caoital city of Kerala state. From Tvm, you can reach Alleppey by road.Alleppey is the place you can hire houseboats. There are many companies having and operating house boats. The Kerala Tourism also operated house boats. Suggest you to, at first have a look at the house boats and then, if you like ,it hire for a 24hr basis. In Alleppey you can also hire a traditional boats by which you can have a trip in the backwater canals.Suggest you to google Kerala tourism and you will find many companies having house boats.Octo/Nov is the high tourist season in Kerala and so reservig house boats is recommended.
You can have ayurvedic experience in most places in Kerala but beware of quacks. To go to Laksadweep, there is a tourist office in Cochin who can be contaced for details.

Cochin is a great place to enter/exit. I ahve visited Cochin in March and it was great.
You should have a backwater experience. There are many tour operaters in Cochin - for house boats or just half-day/full-day trips. Auyerveda experience is a must - you will have oppurtunities - While in Cochin also visit Jew Town with its rich history. Don't hesitate to put questions
