New Zealand...where to go?
Posted: Thu August 14, 2003 04:04 AM UTC
I am looking to visit New Zealand for about 9 days at the end of November. Can anyone recommend places that I should visit (and for how long) - or just whether someone thinks the south island is better than the north. I'm looking for a bit of an adventure week if that helps.

Also I will possibly be travelling solo, can anyone recommened a good 'hop on-hop off' bus company.

Thanks.

It depends on what your interest is....i did check out some intercity hop on and off deals - very attractive, and they have min days and maximum period for each tickets. It does not cost very much.

For 9 days I really recommend only south island. I wil be in Chch from Nov 23rd and will be travelling around the south island. Vter rosehill and peoples46 are great Chch Vters and their pages are worth looking at.

Currently, I have included destinations as follow:

Christchurch - Akaroa - Tekapo - Mt Cook - Glacier - Millford Sound - Queenstown - back to Chch. Not sure if I have a chance to squeeze in the north bit of the south island.

I may just end up in a local coach tour - but it costs much more.

hope this bits help - i am still in the midst of planning.

Queenstown, in South Island, has to be THE adventure capital of NZ. However, there are adventurous things to do all over the country. You can kayak through underground caves lit by millions of glow-worms in Waitomo (North Is), or go black-water rafting in the same place (a crazy ride on an inner tube through rapids in caves!). There are some spectacular sights around Nelson. Rotorua has the usual adventure junky stuff amd Taupo can offer a few too. As far as scenery goes, the South Island is pretty spectacular, but the North Island has its charming spots. You need to read up as much as you can before coming - you're here for such a short time that you need to plan carefully.

Hey,

A lot of people do the kiwi experience bus (hop-on/off). The drivers are characters and you meet some cool people along the way.
I would rate the South Island more than the north. But it depends what you're after.
If you are into whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, skiing, snowboarding, jetboating, luging, hiking/walking, skydiving etc then the South Island's for you.
Spend time in sunny and arty Nelson.
Whale and dolphin watch off Kaikoura.
Christchurch is our 'english' city with a peninsula called Akaroa settled by the French.
Dunedin is our 'scottish' city, visit the albatross and blue penguin colonies.
Stop off in Oamaru and see the yellow-eyed penguins.
Moerua with its cool boulders - the only place in the world like it.
Queenstown is adventure central.
Fiordland and the West Coast for untouched breathtaking scenery.
I could go on forever......
Hope this helps!
Bec:-)

I love New Zealand, and both north and south island are different but I have a soft spot for Queenstown, plenty for you young adverture people to do, I loved watching everyone. I did go overland in a 4x4 up to the mountains, did jetboat down a gorge, and take the skylift up the mountain at Queenstown, watched them paraglide, dry tobbogan, Milford sound is spectacular fjordland (similar to Norway), I went February, weather good. C/church is v. English, with the River Avon running through, the ferry ride from Picton to Wellington is nice, I liked Wellington. Rotorua in the North as well is a must see if time is available, also the Maori hangi, delicious food, and entertainment. My 6 weeks was not enough !! want to go back again, - you will too. Feel free to chat more, and enjoy your trip
