| Chennai (Madras) | Retirement living outside Chennai Posted: Sun April 15, 2007 01:24 AM UTC
Does anyone know of regulations or restrictions regarding retirees?
My wife (Indian Malaysian) and I (ex Australian) want to migrate to Chennai to live permanently. Is it possible to get permanent residency status? Are there foreign investment rules if we want to buy property? In Europe, a foreigner cannot buy car insurance (buying the car is not a problem but without insurance, there's not much point). Any similar problems in India.? Help is greatly appreciated. cheers greg barlow Malaysia |

If you wife is Indian, she may be able to get an OCI card or a PIO card - these are overseas indian citizen, and Person of Indian origin cards. There are rules so you need to check with the Indian Embassy. Basically if she ever had an indian passport then it easy, otherwise other rules apply. Once your wife can either get OCI or PIO, you can ( as a spouse) apply for PIO card. With these you can stay in india and buy property etc.

To buy a property in India, you must be an Indian national or a non resident Indian. If you have a joint venture company in India, such company can buy real estate in India.
If you wish to get a PR status in India, you can apply one with Indian Embassy. Suggest you to google Reserve bank of India (RBI) website as you may get more information. It is better to have a discussion with Indian embassy in your city. Best of Luck.

I agree with Sam.
I am a Malaysian Indian. I am a second generation Indian in Malaysia. I have used my father's details to obtain PIO card. You can buy properties in India. India has a liberal policy of accepting Indians who have left India many years ago, back on their soil. Great place, prices are going up though. Cost of living is also going up. Ganram

Many thanks to everyone for their help. Some really helpful advice in here and i'm grateful.
We've checked with the local Indian Embassy and their advice was the same as from you guys. Many thanks. We'll be moving sometime in the next year or so. Lots of things to sort out including selling our house here in Seremban, Malaysia greg
