Gdansk Poland and Gdansk Information
Posted: Thu April 12, 2007 10:30 AM UTC
Hi,
Next month in May 2007, I will be travelling to Gdansk for a business trip for a week. I wanted to know about some basic information.
1). Are there flights available from Warsaw to Gdansk ? What would be the flying time and which airline would be the best ?
2). Is train from Warsaw the best mode to travel, or is it the flight ?
3). Is Zloty used as the currency or the Euro ?
4). Finally, how do I pronounce "Gdanks" :)), is the "d" silent ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

You prounounce the d in Gdansk but Im not sure on the correct way of pronouncing the whole word. It always sounds different when local says it and my Polish is terrible.

Not sure on the flights but the train trip took a good 4 hours.. but then they have so called 'fast' trains and 'slow' trains. The slow trains stop at pretty much every station on the way. They are cheaper but much slower.

Zloty is still the currency in poland.

Re: Polish Beer. Try all the different types but Warka, Lech and Tyskie were my favourites.

Have a good one.

1) Yes. Polish national LOT have flights Warsaw-Gdansk several flights every day. Cost 138 PLN.
Travel planning page:
http://www.lot.com/default.aspx?_lang=en
Flight shall take about 1 hour. You should add another 45 min for show up before departure and then at least 30-40 min from airport to the city.
2) Yes, in terms of cost-effectiveness, or cost-return. It takes about 4 hours and 15 to 30 min, depending on train. Main stations are in city center in both cities. Cost depends on exact train (phisical conditions, number of seats in the cabin etc). On average it is 108 PLN first class 72 PLN second class.
Best are InterCity (IC), Express (EX) trains or TLK trains, by this order.
The Intercity tarins:
http://www.intercity.pl/en/main
and "find your train" is here:
http://www.intercity.pl/en/93
The general rail road planner which includes the above mentioned IC:
http://www.rozklad.pkp.pl/bin/query.exe/en?
3) Zloty. Official rate today is: 3.83 for 1 EUR, 2.85 for 1 USD.
4) Gdansk with soft n as if there was a silent/invisible i before it.

Do not forget 1 till 3 May are holidays, 4, 5 and 6 are weekend. Excellent combination for long vacation and less frequent trains / buses etc.

Hi!
U know everything about traveling so i can give u one advice about Gdansk. U can try to say "Gdansk" as people explain it aboove but(i think i wouldnt be able to repeat after their explenation ;)...just in case write it down somwhere and show whenever u won't be sure if people can understand u (eg. when u'll buy tickets). My firend from canada though he can say Wroclaw perfectly but he...was wrong :D and he get ticket to warsaw (even if he was sure he said 'Wroclaw' with typical polish accent :) so just in case always check if there is correct city name at ur ticket. Wish u luck :)
