Kanchanaburi Some questions Please
Posted: Thu April 12, 2007 04:56 AM UTC
Hi,
Some questions regarding Kanchanburi.
(1) Can you please suggest a nice place to stay for one night? It should not be very far from Kanchanburi town (I have come across some resorts even 50-60 km away from Kanchanburi town. Don’t want something like that :-). Budget – up to 1000 Baht.
(2) I want to purchase tour package to see in and around Kanchanburi (I would like to do Death Railway, Tiger temple, Erawan falls, Elephant riding and rafting in a day). I would like to arrive there the previous night so that I can start early morning to finish all of the above attractions in a day time. Is it feasible?
(3) We are two on the trip (me and my wife). Can I book our tours after reaching Kanchanburi the previous night? Any recommendations / suggestions in this regard 9or any tour operator you’d recommend)?
(4) Can we go from Ayuthaya to Kanchanburi? What’s the best way? How much time it takes for this journey?

Thanks in advance, friends!!!

Depends on what time you arrive at Kanch, I think the tour agencies close at around 8pm. I stayed at the Jolly Frogs, the rooms are basic, but it has a nice garden by the river. I've got some photos in my unfinished Kanch page.

You will have to go through BKK to get to Ayutthaya by public transportation. It's probably better if you spend another night in Kanch. The tour ends at 4-5pm. The bus takes about 2-2.5 hours to BKK, then you have to go to another bus/train station to Ayutthaya, hard to say how long with traffic in BKK. Then the trip to Ayutthaya by bus is 1.5-2 hours. It'll be a long day if you go right after the tour.

There are lots of accommodation choices in Kanchanburi. Stayed at Jolly Frog and Apple GH - both are basic but preferred Apple because of the attached bath and veranda overlooking the garden, friendly staff and fabulous restaurant!! Apple serves the best massaman curry & coconut shakes plus there is a cooking school at the restaurant if you are interested.

Plenty of tours around Jolly Frog and Apple GH so shouldn't be a problem finding a tour within your budget/timeframe providing you arrive in Kanchanburi before closing time.

Happy Travels : )

Are these two guesthouses - Apple and Jolly Frog, at the river bank?

Jolly Frog is. The rooms don't face directly to the river, but the garden is. I think Apple is about 100m or so from the river.

I recomend Phong Phen guesthouse much newer than Jolly frog and has real walls (JF is ratan) 400 for aircon and hot water. The garden is on the river.(I think they have opened rooms near the river now).If you want to stay ON the river walk down Th. Rong Hip Awy next to Apple GH. The floating guesthouses have seen better days, but VN was refurbished last year. (haven't checked it out), have a look. Most guesthouse can organise your day trips to the places you want.
Ayuthaya to Kan is a pain in the bum. Have to change at Suphranburri and as it's off he backpackers trail there's not much English spoken.I did Kan to Ayuthaya a couple of years ago but was travelling with a local. We took a bus then a minibus. Alternatively go back into BKK and out again.
Last time I was in Kan Phong Phen was advertising a minibus to Ayuthaya for 350b but not sure where to get it in Ayuthaya, (Ayuthaya Guest house or the Moon cafe would probably be a good guess)

I recently stayed at Phong Phen Guest House in Kanchanaburi and was not at all impressed with there services. I found the staff to both be sullen and inefficient. Furthermore, the sheets were filthy.

The place did have a few postitive aspects. It has a great location and the bathrooms were clean and modern.
