| Antigua Guatemala | Hiking a volcano Posted: Wed April 11, 2007 01:49 PM UTC
Pardon my ignorance if this sounds stupid. I am registered to attend a Spanish school( in Antigua) later in the month and was hoping to hike up one of the mountains. Any suggestions will be most appreciated...
Thanks! |

it's possible and very easy to organise in antigua.
you will normally need to be part of a group, but it's very cheap and can be done by several local tour operators.

Hello there, you can hike the pacaya volcano. There are several tour operators in antigua that offer this tour. Make sure you take good hiking shoes. Believe it or not the heat from the lava can melt the soles of sneakers or rubber type shoes. Also, you would need a jacket as it gets pretty chilly up on the top. If you take the afternoon tour you can catch a more spectacular view when it gets dark.FYI thre are 34 volcanoes in guatemala and some of them are still active. From antigua you can also hike the agua volcano but this one is not active. Its crater is about the size of a football field. good luck.

THERE ARE 3 VOLCANOES LOCALLY TO ANTIGUA WHICH ARE: ACATENANGO, FUEGO, AND AGUA. PLUS THERE'S ALSO PACAYA WHICH IS LIKE AN HOURS DRIVE AWAY.
FUEGO IS ACTIVE AND CAN BE TOO RISKY TO APPROACH, AND I THINK YOU NEED TO GET UP ACATENANGO FIRST FOR IT ANYWAYS. ACATENANGO APPARENTLY TAKES HOURS TO GET UP THEN DOWN, I THINK YOU NEED TO SLEEP IN A TENT OVERNIGHT ON THE SLOPES OR SUMMIT. BUT YOU DO HOWEVER GET A VERY GOOD VIEW OF FUEGO UP THERE. AGUA IS EXTINCT AND IS NOT A BAD VOLCANO TO HIKE UP. YOU NEED TO GO UPHILL TO THE LITTLE TOWN OF SANTA MARIA DE JESUS FIRST WHICH IS NOT FAR FROM ANTIGUA. AND FINALLY, PACAYA IS AN ACTIVE VOLCANO BUT THE MOST EXCITING ONE TO HIKE UP TO. AS IT WAS MENTIONED YOU'LL FIND PLENT OF AGENCIES THAT ORGANISE TRIPS TO THERE. YOU'LL GET TO GET CLOSE UP TO MOLTEN LAVA EVEN! FEEL FREE TO CHECKOUT MY PACAYA PAGES AS I'VE GOT VERY DETAILED TIPS ON IT. ALSO GOT TIPS ON AGUA ON MY SANTA MARIA DE JESUS PAGES.

HI,
I really recommend to climb the Acatenango. You should go up to La Soledad and start the climb from there. It's about 4-5 hours to the top. Ask the owner (Don Martin) of the small and only shop in la Soledad he can direct you to a local guide. If you are in good physical condition, you can join Fuego from Acatenango and go down to Alotenango from there. It's a long run but you can make it in one day.
