Trieste Travelling Trieste/Ljubljana/Bled
Posted: Tue April 10, 2007 11:10 AM UTC
Hi!
We are flying into Trieste in May for 5/6 days and are hoping to visit Trieste-Ljubljana and Lake Bled (and possibly the caves between Trieste and Ljubljana).
We are going to be using public transport. I'm just wondering whether this is a crazy plan? We arrive in Trieste round 15:00 on Thursday and leave the following Tuesday afternoon. I'm just wondering how long to devote to each place...because I know we are going to be short on time and may have to leave something out! Any iteneraries/suggestions appreciated!
Cheers!

Hi,
O.k. let me see now... There is a train connection between Trieste and Ljubljana, but it runs between June and September, so train is out.:)
There is a bus that leaves Trieste every day from Mon-Sat at 14.00, except on Italian holidays and May 1. And it goes via Postojna (the caves that you want to see - Postumia in Italian!), so what you could do is to buy a ticket from Trieste to Postojna (1 1/2 h.). You arrive at approx. 15.30 to Postojna, go visit the caves, and then you take a bus from Postojna to Ljubljana (approx. 1 hour drive), there is one every hour or so (the last one leaves at approx. 22.00). It is probably better to arrive earlier to Ljubljana so you can make the necessary arrengements, although it would be even better if you do that in advance, to avoid the trouble finding a place to stay at 21.00 or 22.00 o'clock.
The best thing is to make Ljubljana your base. So, the next day you can take a bus to Bled (1 good hour drive and there is at least one every hour) spend the day around Bled and return to Ljubljana in the evening (last bus at 20.30), spend the weekend in Ljubljana, visit the flee market on Sunday (starts very early in the morning) in the old centre along the Ljubljanica river, have a nice tea or coffee in one of the numerous cafes along the river, and have fun...
Maybe you can visit also some other places around or near Ljubljana and then take the bus back to Trieste on Tuesday at 6.25 (it's early, but that's the only one!) So, that's it, in a very condensed way. Have fun.

I don't understand why people who are interested in visiting Slovenia do not fly to Slovenia... to save some euros the fly to the italian Trieste, to discover shortly that the public transport connections with ex-jugoslavia are ugly, smelly, uneasy, unconfotable, expensive, and so on. Bus timetables are concieved to transport the slavic workers in Italy in the morning and carry they home at evening. It's all. You can guess how useful and pleasant they can be for tourists.....

I agree... the public transporation is clearly not very convenient. But not everyone can fly to Slovenia. In Prague, where I am based, for example, there aren't any flights to Slovenia--just Trieste. Pls. don't assume it is always a matter of choice.
