| Abuja | Possible job in Abuja Posted: Mon April 9, 2007 12:37 AM UTC
Hi,
I have an opportunity to work for two years in Abuja. I can take my wife and kids, but she's worried it isn't safe. Is the risk worth the opportunity? I really want to go, but I want to relieve her fears if possible. thank you all. Dave |

Hi Dave,
I lives with my father in Yola, Nigeria in the early 80s, I was 17. There was a military coup, religious insurrection and several other frightening and dangerous occurrences. While I wouldn't trade this experience in, particularly as my father and I became quite close, it was seriously dangerous and not for the faint of heart. Mob activity happens frequently and spontaneously, machetes are the weapons of choice. I would suggest that you try to go for a limited time on your own and check it out before bringing your family. Also, make sure that you are paid in hard currency:dollars, pounds, etc. The naira fluctates wildly. Sorry to be a bummer. April aprilshelleybrown@hotmail.com

Abuja is generally very safe for expatriates but you can contact the expatriate community in Nigeria on oyibosonline.com
