I lives with my father in Yola, Nigeria in the early 80s, I was 17. There was a military coup, religious insurrection and several other frightening and dangerous occurrences. While I wouldn't trade this experience in, particularly as my father and I became quite close, it was seriously dangerous and not for the faint of heart. Mob activity happens frequently and spontaneously, machetes are the weapons of choice. I would suggest that you try to go for a limited time on your own and check it out before bringing your family. Also, make sure that you are paid in hard currency:dollars, pounds, etc. The naira fluctates wildly.
