Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Chugchilán Dutch Man and daughter died in Canyon
Posted: Wed August 13, 2003 01:47 AM UTC
I'm just wondering if anyone knows the real cause of death of these two on July 21. We were in Chugchilán on the 22, when the bodies were found. However, all I can find is a newspaper article from July 26, saying they aren't sure how the two died. One theory is a rockslide, but the man's pockets were turned inside out.

If anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate you passing it on.

Thanks,
Jnette

the story in the Dutch newspapers was that they were both killed by their 14 (!) year old guide.

According to the article in July 26 El Comercio newspaper (www.elcomercio.com), they left alone, ahead of the other group, because the father thought the daughter would not be able to keep up with the others. Nothing was mentioned about a guide. The policeman who found the bodies, said there was a huge rock, that took 3 people to move, on the father's head. I can't find any follow up article on the internet.

This article was what I could find for you. A tragedy, whatever the cause.

Well, everyone, I got the answer for sure. I rechecked El Comercio today, and there was an article. There was no mention in the first article about a young boy guiding the father and daughter. However, in this latest article, the boy led them to where the bodies were found, and told how he was guiding them, when a man came along and sent them in the wrong direction. He then killed the father and daughter and threatened the boy. I still find it difficult to believe that this violence occured in that place. The people are all so very friendly and quiet. I suppose there is always a bad apple in every barrel. I wanted to believe it was an accident. The man placed the large stone where it would appear to have hit Kleemer naturally. Guess we'll just all have to be more careful every where we go these days.
