Jasper National Park Wildlife in Jasper
Posted: Sun April 8, 2007 03:16 AM UTC
Hi There!

I'm going to Jasper NP with my girlfriend for a week on April 12. I'm wondering if there's a chance to see bears that time of year. I don't know when they come out of hibernation. And what other wildlife can be seen? Just curious!
Thanks for your time!

Greetz,
Ralph

Hibernation may take place for 4 to 7 months; females hibernate longer than males. So to answer your question, if it was not a terribly strong winter, they may possibly be waking up in April. Regardless, there are always a few that get out of their rhythm and wake up mid winter.

If they are at low enough elevation or latitude where year round food is available, they may not hibernate at all.

Around Jasper, there will be deer, elk, big horn sheep, mountain goats just to name a few. You'd be lucky to see them all.
