booking hotels and day trips
Posted: Thu April 5, 2007 05:21 AM UTC
I'm a newbie here. I will be traveling to Norway this July. This is my first trip there. I plan to go on the Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo to Bergen. I am interested in stopping in Flåm and maybe Voss. Can I get away with just showing up
looking for a room or do I really need to book well in advance? I'm not sure how popular this trip is. Also, I want to kayak in Flåm and go rafting in Voss. Does that really need to be booked in advance? Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,
Flam and Voss are very popular of course , but I think you must not book in advance. We were there with 5 persons in august and we didn't book.

July *is* peak tourist season here, and Flåm is a very small place with a limited number of hotel beds available - so I'd book in advance to be sure to get a place to stay.. The Nutshell trip is very popular - I did the Flåm railway in July and I was certainly not alone on the train... ;o)

If I were you, I'd book in advance.

Flåm isn't big, and you're arriving at the peak of the tourist season.

The Nutshell tour is popular, but most people don't stay in Flåm, but go on to Bergen. However, the more people take the tour, the more people are likely to stay in Flåm and book rooms.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone gone rafting out of Voss? I imagine that needs to be booked in advance. Can anyone confirm?

You need to book hotel/room in Flåm in advance in July, esp. weekends. For many Norwegians Flåm is the end stop of the popular Rallarvegen bike route. And many will choose to stay the night in Flåm before going home with their bikes next morning. Budget accomodation tend to get filled up first. Don't know if you need to book the kayak in advance as I haven't tried that. But I have tried to get accomodation...

You could try to get accommodation in Gudvangen (on Naeroyfjord before you leave for Flam)There are two campsites there and, in addition to cabins, they also have some rooms. Have a look at my Gudvangen page for addresses.
