Versailles A major climb at Versailles?
Posted: Wed April 4, 2007 11:11 AM UTC
My local travel agent is insisting that the train to Versailles will let us off at the bottom of a large hill, requiring an exhausting trek to the top. He thinks a tour bus would be better for us since we have kids along.

I have never heard any one mention this before and I am skeptical of this information.

Can any one enlighten me?

Thanks!

absolute cobblers, he's just trying to make commission.

it's about a half-mile walk, and it id does slope upwards - but only very gently.

The street is a little uneven, but easily walked.

If you want to take a bus tour, there is one that takes in Barbizon, Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte.

Unless you absolutely need Versailles to make your trip official, you will see more history. Vaux-le-Vicomte was the prototype for Versailles and was never vadalized during the French Rebellion.

And, you will fight a lot fewer tourists.

The bus leaves from an office opposite the Louvre. You can buy your tickets there.

of course it's on a hill--most palaces are! not steep at all! let me tell ya, climbing a slope will dwarf the walking you will be doing at versailles, anyway--place is HUGE!
