Death Valley National Park Cars and Gas Stations around Death Valley
Posted: Tue April 3, 2007 04:13 PM UTC
Is gas more expensive around Death Valley?
Are there a shortage of gas stations around there?

I'll be there next weekend and my only fear is my car running out of gas in the middle of nowhere.

What is the frequency of gas stations around the Death Valley region?

Gas is expensive everywhere in California. It's about $3.25 here in San Diego, probably 20-30 cents more per gallon in that area. Ouch.

There is one gas station in Death Valley that I know of, at Furnace Creek. You definitely want to fill up before you head into the park, either at Barstow, or, better, Baker, if you're coming from the south. If from the West, fill up at whatever that town is on the 395, Independence? Regardless, don't leave the major highways without a full tank. If you do, I doubt you'll run out of gas, even if you drive all around the park, assuming your car gets more than 300 miles for a tank. If it doesn't, there is one station that I'm sure of, might be a second near the visitor center. It'll say on your map or check their website.

yep to the above post. Make sure you fill up before you turn off the highway, whichever your entry point is. Gas will be higher priced at hard to reach locations for obvious reasons.

You won't have any problem with gas. I did the ride on my motorcycle and I only get about 150 miles per tank. There is gas at many spots along Hwy 395 (Bishop & Lone Pine) west of the valley and Hwy 95 (Beatty) east of DV. In DV we gassed at Stovepipe Wells and Furnance Creek. Just fill up before you leave Hwy 95 or 395.

In the Valley, gas is at Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek. Just outside, there is gas in Panamint Springs.

Note: There is only "regular" gas at Stovepipe, so if your vehicle requires mid-grade or better, you better plan accordingly.

And, yes, it is a bit more expensive inside the Park, as you would expect.

just came from death valley end of may 07, there is one gas station in stopepipe that i seen, my advice is fill before you ever enter death valley. and go as early as you can. a/c is not recommended to run in your car for about 10 miles because of steep grades in and out of valley. might not seem much, but at 104 degreeas when i went was enough to make a difference. don't ride your brakes either, they can over heat, better to down shift into lower gear. it's a long drive from where ever you come from too.

Hi,

Last time I was there, there were pumps at Shoshone, just south of the Valley.

Good luck
