Upernavik Travel Forum

I am travelling with 5 other companions to Upernavik in August. I am hoping to make a contact there as we intend to ship six kayaks over from Ireland. Any local information would be great. ie are there polar bears around in August

You shouldn't have any trouble with polar bears, especially not in August. It's not really worth worrying about.

Upernavik is lovely. The island is pretty small, but the weather should be good when you are there, and with most of the snow melted by then you should be able to explore it all.

There is not much to do, as such, so be prepared for that. Here is one thing to do that I would recommend: on Wednesday and Friday evenings they open up the runway at the airport for people to go and play on – it's the only flat bit of land so it's nice to watch everyone skating, cycling and so on.

The museum is fantastic. The graveyard is also lovely. Bo Albrechtsen, who runs the museum and tourist office (both in the same building) is really helpful and should be able to give you advice on shipping kayaks and stuff (although I don't know if it will be possible).

Thanks for your information. We will be arriving on the 7th August in Upernavik. We have shipped our kayaks out and they should be there now. We have been in contact with Bo and he is very helpful.

We should be on the water by the 8th and hope to head north exploring as we go.
