Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Where to spend the extra day
Posted: Mon April 2, 2007 06:11 PM UTC
Hi All,

We (family with 2 girls ages 10 & 12) will be visiting Newfoundland this summer for 14 days (starting mid July). Our itinerary has us taking the ferry onto the island at Argentia, and leaving at Port aux Basques. Our stay will be:

3 days in St John's,
2 days in Trinity (Bonavista peninsula),
5 days in Gros Morne,
2 days in L'Anse Aux Meadows, and
1 day in Port aux Basques

We will be dragging our tent trailer along, and plan on staying in B&B's as well to break up the camping. Here is my question. We originally planned on visiting Twillingate to break up the trip from the east coast to the west coast. Twillingate will take an additional 3-4 hours of driving from the Trans Canada Hwy. Is it worth the drive? Will it offer anything different that the other places on my itinerary does not have in terms of scenary? The big attraction of Twillingate for me is the icebergs, but will I be able to see the same at St Anthony?

Other options that I have include:
Labrador
more time in Gros Morne
more time in Bonavista
side route somewhere else (suggestions appreciated)

What do you think I should do with the extra day?

Also, any recommendations on camp grounds in Gros Morne? Any particular camp sites that I should try to get?

I certainly would stop in Twillingate. As you approach Twillingate you will come to some waterfront on your left side at a sharp right curve, there is a private Fishermans Museum and gift shop. It is definitely worth seeing that at $5 CND each. The whole story about the cod fishing is told during a guided tour through the place. You might see an Iceburg, but chances are better up North. And when you come off the trans-canada highway at Deer Lake, on your way North on the 430, stop at the insectarium and see the butterflies and other interesting things. Also worth the stop as it is on the way. Make sure you stop at the Marine Research Institute on Bonne Bay. A guided tour by grad-students is worth the $3 CND. And do make the hike out to Western Brook Pond. The scenery is fantastic. And at all times, keep a sharp eye out for Moose crossing the road. In fact, try not to drive after dark. The place is infested with them. And of less importance, watch out for Caribou east of Deer Lake. There are herds of them in the interior, but they sometimes cross the tran-scanada.
It is a great place to visit. I was there 3 weeks, and wish it was more. I may go back again.
