Yes of course she is, I travelled alone on planes from the age of 9! In fact on British Airways, a 16-year old is not even considered as an "unaccompanied minor", unless supervision is explicitly requested, see http://www.britishairways.com/travel/childinfo/public/en_gb.
I would advise you/your parents to contact/look up the conditions of the airline concerned.

She will be able to travel alone paying the full adult fare. My niece does it often (just the Jhb-London leg)and is fine. If the person booking her in alerts the ground staff, who alert the air staff, she will be fine. There is the long wait in jhb to board international but she can take her book / music etc and just wait around. If you fly her as an Unaccompanied Minor, there is sometimes a small charge but at least she will not be left alone. these kids are herded about, but I reckon a 16 yr old shoudl manage. Good luck

hi
she is an adult by SA law so if u book her on return from durban to london she should not need to change as some flights do fly directly.check out this site for more info and the cheapest flights on many different airlines.www.travelstart.co.za. it is best to book via them as u will pay in rand n not pound which at this moment is R14.50 per pound(current exchange rate)today
cheers jane
