How do you rate Carolina's beaches
Posted: Mon August 11, 2003 09:39 PM UTC
My wife and I want to move to a Southern city within an hour's drive of an airport that has a direct flight to my hometown, Louisville, Ky, which would mean Atlanta, Charlotte, DC, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Orlando, or Tampa. The other catch is we would like to be within an hour's drive of reasonable ocean beaches!

I'm thinking Charlotte, with family in Ashville and DC and therefore the Carolinas come to mind. But the only decent Southern beaches I've heard much about are in Florida. Suggestions? Are we asking too much?

Decent southern beaches only in Florida? Au contraire. Have you forgotten about Myrtle Beach, or Isle of Palms or the Outer Banks? It is true that those beaches are more like 3 hours from Charlotte, and Daytona is only about an hour from Orlando.

The Charleston, SC area has some nice beaches. Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, and Folly Beach are nice beach areas that are not too touristy. I do not know whether there are direct flights to Louisville from there. You might also want to take a look at the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach area). Charlotte is a good 200 miles away from the nearest beach.

Philadelphia also has a direct flight to Louisville, but that's not southern.

If you live an hour east of Charlotte, say in Florence or Columbia SC you would be about halfway between the airport and the beaches - it would be about an hour and a half to each place.

I do not regard Florida or Texas as being 'southern' in the same way the Carolinas or Virginia are. I would not want to live in either place, although I have children who live both in TX and FL.

Nags Head, North Carolina is the beach that I find best in the area. Honourable mention goes to Kill Devil Hills and Duck to the north and Wrightsville Beach way off to the South. The only drawback is these beaches are far away from a major airport (except Wrightsville which is close to the regional airport in Wilmington, NC).

I agree with several of these replies in that North Carolina beaches are fantastic! I have been to many beaches up and down the east coast and the ones in North and South Carolina are the best I have been to. What about moving to Raleigh? Being the capital it is large enough to offer the big city amenities and you can get to many beaches within two hours (Atlantic Beach, Carolina Beach, etc.) We moved to Raleigh from PA eight years ago and love our access to the beach. A day trip is easy to do. Actually we just spent last Saturday at Myrtle Beach!

Well, hope I was helpful. If you want more info on Raleigh, email me. I'd be happy to send you more information.

I currently live in Charlotte and I enjoy being 3 hours from the beach and in the winter 3 hours away from the mountains for some skiing!! Charlotte and northeast of Charlotte (Salisbury or Albermarle) have good schools and great neighborhoods.
