You are in an area that you can walk around to The Fashion Square mall and the Phoenecian but, it is quite a hike in heat to anywhere else. I saw busses but, I don't know the schedule, I would recommend a car. A Cab both ways from the airport to 63rd and Camelback would be about $70
try www.wunderground.com for historical weather at that time. It was almost 100F / 39C 2 weeks ago and it dropped to the mid 70's the week after.

I don't think you'll have any high winds or tornadoes in April, but it could be very warm. I remember some March days being close to 100. I agree that it's very nice to have a car in Scottsdale as things are quite spread out. There are lots of good restaurants and I'd even suggest you drive the 80 miles or so to Tucson and visit the Sonoran Desert Museum.. a real treat. I'd also recommend visiting Frank Lloyd Wright's home and workplace which is also in Scottsdale. It's a very interesting spot.

Yes, Taliesin West. Also you must go to Sedona to see the Red Rocks.

I've been living in the Phoenix area for about 15 years now. Didn't know we had tornadoes! The monsoon's can bring high winds with them when they come in July or August, but April is typically amazing. Temps are typically in the low 90's then - not as bad as it sounds when the humidity is only around 15%. I don't know 'age appropriate' activities as some sixty year olds I know like to jump out of airplanes, others want nothing more than a snooze in front of the T.V. What types of things do you typically enjoy, I can give you pointers then as there are a million and one things to do around here. As for transportation you will likely want to rent a car to drive yourself around. There are buses and cabs available, but the buses are typically to far spaced out to really get you where you want to go, cabs tend to require an hour or more notice and can really get expensive as our cities here are VERY spread out.
