Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Petra Egypt To Petra
Posted: Fri March 30, 2007 07:35 AM UTC
I'm back with more questions. So the bulk of my trip is planned, but through searching on the internet, I found that the beautiful ruins of Petra are within reach of Egypt. I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get from Alexandria or Cairo to Petra. I have 3 days to do this. I would like to leave on the 26th of May from either Cairo or Alexandria (preferably Alexandria) to Petra. Do a day tour in Petra the 27th and return to Cairo either that night or early on the 28th. Any suggestions? Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys,

Nick

Hello,

I think doing Cairo-Petra-cairo in three day may be a bit too strenuous.
You will need at least a full day to travel between Cairo and Petra each way, so that leaves only one day in Petra. Ok - it's possible but you might find that allocating two days to Petra is more relaxing travel-wise.

I agree, tight timeline. I would choose land travel - overnight bus from Cairo to Taba border. Cross into Israel, bus to Taba/Eilat(cheap) + cab(20NIS) or cab (?NIS) to Eilat/Aqaba border. Exit tax Isr (70-75NIS), into Jordan, free VISA (out 5JD), cab to bus station (5JD) + bus (3JD) to Petra. If you missed the bus to Petra, cheap route is bus (1JD) to Ma'an, then cab (5JD)to Petra. Overnight Petra/wake up in Petra. See Petra (21JD). Then head back to Egypt the next morning, early.

Warning about the Ferry - they leave when they feel like it.

Prices given are a little bit low; for instance the current rate of a taxi from Ma'an to Petra is more like 8JD and an obvious tourist will probably be asked for 10JD.

This question is definitely a FAQ here, has been asked and answered half a dozen times in the last three months with a few variations. Most certainly you should allow two full days in Petra + one full day each way for the trip.
