Kilimanjaro National Park Help settle a debate

Hi there,

I am hoping to climb kilimanjaro this september, myself and another memeber of the party have reached a sticking point and I would like your help to settle it.
(I won't tell you what my opinion is to kep this fair).

We have had two quotes for the lemosho route from africa travel resources and mem tours of $1900 and $1300 respectively.
We have spoken directly to african travel resources and they seem like a very professionally run company and seem to offer a good package, they seem confident that they will give us the best chance possible of reaching the summit.
We have been supplied much less detail from mem tours ,although it does seem similar in many respects and, although there is little evidence to the contrary, we aren't so sure that they will be as supportive on the climb with respect to food and watching how we go.

I would like to know your opinions on which we should go for, especially from people who have used either company, although everyone is welcome.
Does $1900 sound too much or is $1300 too little?
How much did you pay and did you book in tanzania or in your home country?
Which would YOU go for?

By the same token we have been offered a 5 day safari by both for $1300, how does that price sound?

I would really, really, appreciate some help with this so we can move forward and (finally) book our flights.

Cheers, I really appreciate your help.

I've just discovered that africa travel resources use "african walking company" for the kili trek, as do several other agents.
Has anyone got any contct details?

Those seem like good prices to me. We are planning a trip in october and have been seeing slightly higher prices. I think mem tours is able to be lower because of overhead, and right now that is who we are leaning towards.

Just want to join depate! I am planning on Kili Sept.08 and I expect to pay $2000 at least and would really question the cheaper one!!!! It seems like your comfort level is vital to reaching the summit....good sleep good food and good medical advice when needed. Also I have done safaris in Botswana and Zambia and they are always expensive but I have never regretted it!!!! DT

Hi Graham,
i think you don't have to think much about trekking kilimanjaro via LEMOSHO so i just reccommend you to do with Christal zoo tours the company in moshi, i used to they take me there 7 days with personal poters and days of summit they give me summit porter and guide for $1300 include all thing's not airfair.

For help contact them roycradventure_tours@yahoo.com or you can visit www.christalzootours.com.

I did it a couple of years ago, although went up the marangu route. Getting to the top is not something that can be guaranteed (only 4 of the 16 in our group made it to the summit) questions to be asking each company:

1. what is the porter/walker ratio (ours was 2 porters per walker)
2. what is the guide/walker ratio (ours was 1 per 4 walkers)
3. will all the guides go right to the summit? (all of ours did)
4. what is the max weight you are allowed in your kit? (we got 15kg)
5. compare the no. of days acclimatisation each company gives you before your attempt at the summit.

Cant comment on the price as i paid in sterling and booked it all from the uk. I used a company called Explore. You could look at their website though and download the trip dossier to get an idea of what a decent company is offering.

Feel free to email if you have any more queries or look at my pages

Dave
