Looking forward to a cruise stop in Dover for 8 hours. Is it possible to make easy connections to Canterbury on our own? The ship excursions are very expensive.

Not sure how far it is to dover station, but there may well be a bus. From Dover Priory (Dover STation) its a 15 to 20 minute rail journey to canterbury, which will cost you £5.60 per person as a cheap day return.

It may even be worth look at spending the morning in Canterbury itself and then getting a bus to Herne Bay or Whistable to visit a british "seaside" town (there isn't a huge amount to do in Canterbury).

www.kentpublictransport.info has a journey planner which will help; buses etc.

As for the weather, it could be chilly, warm, sunny, wet....or a combination of all or some of these. Be prepared!

And why not stay in Dover and visit Dover Castle and Hellfire Corner? Fantastic views and a great thing to do.
The walk from the Cruise Terminal to Dover Priory is a pretty long one, so if you choose to take the train, get a taxi.
Or you could walk up the Western Heights and along the White Cliffs. There is a lovely restaurant on the seafront next to De Bradelei Wharf (the discount shopping centre) called Cullins Yard for lunch, or more pub grub at Marine Court (inside the Premier Travel Inn on the seafront).
