Yukon Territory Driving from Skagway to Fairbanks (or Anchorage)
Posted: Mon March 26, 2007 12:58 PM UTC
I was thinking of using the bus lines from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, via Dawson City (not sure there are still connections from Skagway, as Alaska Direct doesn't seem to have a website anymore), but the agency I enquired with seems to favor the car rental option (maybe for business reasons, of course)... My problem is, I'm not sure it would be reasonable for somebody like me, who never drives (I've got my licence, but, living in Paris, I don't own a car and only use public transportation...), to head into the Yukon on my own and onto gravel roads right after mid-May... Never even drove an automatic car!
So, does anybody around here have any experience of such a drive, and do you think the idea is completely insane, given the circumstances??
Thanks!

We have yet to do this trip but it is planned. We need some more Airmiles to get to Whitehorse.

Planned route is Whitehorse , Dawson, Fairbanks , Anchorage and back to Whitehorse with a rental car ( SUV). You have to understand that these are long and slow drives between cities with not much in between. The only road to Skagway is from Whitehorse ( 180 km a 3 hour drive and then you have to take the same road back).

Whitehorse to Dawson 550 km 7 hours
Fairbanks to Anchorage 580 km 7 hours
Anchorage to Whitehorse 1150 km 13 hours

I would suggest you find a friend you has driven these types of distances in a day . Taking a bus is not the way to do it. The idea is not insane .

Alaska/Yukon Trails operates from Whitehorse to Dawson City ($143)and on to Fairbanks ($162) on Mon, Wed, & Fridays from May 15-Sept 15, if the Top-of-the-World Hwy is open. They require minimum 2 persons traveling, but if they do not have 2, you can get on a wait list. They have a web site at www.alaskashuttle.com. Be sure if you rent a car that it is insured in both Canada and US or you will be stopped at border and not allowed to continue. Also, check out drop fees. Taylor Hwy between Bondary and Chicken not for timid drivers. Gravel, narrow at the top. Have a great trip, you are going to cover some beautiful territory.

Hi there! Thanks for all the info and hopefully it will come in handy again some day, but... my trip was last year!! :-) I'll take note anyway, because there's plenty I haven't done and seen and would LOVE to go back!
Unforgetable memories!
Have a great day!
