Mnt. Kinabalu-hike to Raban Lata and back in 1 day-permit?
Posted: Mon March 26, 2007 06:09 AM UTC
I just found this in the 2007 Lonely Planet to Malaysia.
"A guide is only compulsory if you intend to venture beyond Raban Lata, ie to the Summit"
We do not have the accommodation at the Raban Lata Resthouse but I wonder if we
simply can hike to Raban Lata and back in one day without any permits, accommodation.
and wonder if anyone has any experience with this, comment or ideas if this information is correct.
thank you.

Well......you can easily climb to the resthouse and back in half a day but not if you want to make it to the summit. You don't need accommodation & guide for a day trip. But don't let them know about how far you're climbing, just tell them for a few shelters only. This way you just have to pay the entrance fee & not the permit. Good luck!

Only if you are fit enough ... it will take you many hours to do that. Personally I think it will be too much for a day. Don't take the descent for granted, the steepness and the mud make it as difficult as the ascent. If you are determined to do it, make a start for it at daybreak. Take torches with you also, as it will probably be dark on your way back.

as i understand it, no accomodation = no climb, need to double check on this. in any case, its worth it at the top.

also do not take the descent lightly - it can be awfully hard on your knees.

good luck.

I'm absolutely sure that you can climb back & forth in 1 day but as I say, you must get their permission for doing that. As long as you pay the permit, guide & etc......you'll be able to do it. Of course, you have to be really fit for it.
