Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Icebergs
Posted: Sun March 25, 2007 11:48 AM UTC
We will be staying in the corner Brook region mid June and would like to see Icebergs . A friend has suggested driving up to St Anthony but I believe this is a 5-6 hour trip. Can anyone suggest another area to see this and is it worth the trip?

Another good place to see icebergs is Twillingate (from Corner Brook, take Hwy 1 East and then Hwy 340 North). But whether you can see any really depends on your luck. I went to both places in July last year. It was too foggy to see anything at St. Anthony. It was sunny and clear at Twillingate but I didn't see any. The local people told me that they only saw a tiny one last year. Not sure if it will be better this year. I did see whales though. If you are driving to St. Anthony, you could visit Gros Morne National Park and L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site en route. I would say all those places are well worth even if you don't see any icebergs. Twillingate is really beautiful.

It is about a 4 - 5 hour drive up to the Viking site. That happens to be the only place where I saw any icebergs when I was there in June 2005. It was clear there, but was all fogged in at Twillingate. So you see, you take your chances from one year to the next. I stayed at Cows Head north of Gros Morne for several days/nights and visited the park. Outstanding place. Also you should visit Bonne Bay and Norris Point. All kinds of things to see both North of Rocky Harbour, and south of there.
