Faroe Islands Travel Forum

Hi everybody,

we are looking at the option of taking the Smyrnil ferry in july or august from Denmark to the Faroe Islands and then on to Iceland.

What would the weather be like in those months? And how rough will the sea be on the way there?

Also, any idea if the boat trip is nice for kids? as we will be travelling with 3 small children (5 yrs, 4 yrs, 1 month)

Hi, i was there in august a few years ago and had a great time - the weather was raining and windy - the boat trip had been fine though coming from the shetlands and then from the faroes to iceland but they were overnight so i was sleeping mostly - and i remember wishing the sun would come out but when it did all the beautiful waterfalls everywhere stopped and the pretty mist over the dramatic hills disappeared and it just wasnt anywhere near as beautiful!!
i would just say do as all the danish tourists seemed to do - they wearing warm and windproof and showerproof ski gear type trousers and jackets totally prepared for the weather even though it was summer (and i was only in skirts!!!) but we did have lovely weather with sun too which was very nice.

so as for weather predictions i dont think its really possible being small islands in the middle of a big ocean!! but i loved it!! and thats why i stayed for the ferry after and had a week or more rather than 2 or 3 days!
i got good deals for tours around the island each day - one of them included an excellent museum, which would probably be of some interest to the 4 and 5 year old, - and another a boat over to the island in the middle of Torshavn harbour which had a puffin museum etc.

so enjoy!

while I was working on cruise-ships I came several times to this part of the Atlantic and may say that there is a 75% guarantee for really rough seas between Faroe and Iceland.
but maybe you catch the other 25% ;~)
