Exit Glacier Trail in Late May?
Posted: Fri March 23, 2007 03:25 PM UTC
Hi there! I am new on TV and this is my first post!
My husband and I, intend to visit Alaska in late May 2007 (May26-June3). It will be our first time to Alaska. We will travel by car around Anchorage for a week.
We plan to walk the harding icefield trail of Exit Glacier, but we are not sure if the trail will be safe enough that time with the deep snow. My husband and I have no experience in climbing in snow although we do travel a lot in the lower 48.
Another concern is about the bear. Is it easy to encounter bears in that trail? Is a pepper spray necessary to bring? Any suggestion will be very helpful!
Thanks!!

Usually late May is pretty good as far as snow melt and stuff. But we've had a ton of snow this year. Either way, I think you should be okay--we're warming up quickly. There's 35 inches of snow there right now and it's only the beginning of April.

Here's a link for current conditions if you have any question of whether you should attempt it or not:

And here's a very good link about how to deal with the bears:
