Hi MJ,
My name is Henk, Australian, married to Ormocana, travel to Ormoc regularly past 20 years, next trip this coming August.Don't how often you look at your Virtual Tourist email but can answer your transport questions if you like. If you are still interested contact me on my hotmail henkvan111@hotmail.com and we'll talk more. WARNING: If you are planning to buy/sponsor a jeep to help your family tell them NOT TO TELL everyone that the backing money comes from you. REASON: Once the word gets around that there is a foreign backer to any business your relatives will become very much the victim of all kinds of corruption. Vehicle registration will become really tough until you slip some pesos etc etc. Also, should you be unfortunately enough to hit some person and for example break their leg, insurance will cover it normally but if for some reason the victim finds out that there is some foreign pera to be gotten the compensation will go through the roof especially if the accident is your fault and worse still if the attending police take sides. You know that this kind of thing is normal in Philippines. I love the place but some things there can give me the sh#*ts if you know what I mean. Also, you mention buying a Jeep. You will find Jeeps or Jeepneys are now no longer fashionable. Too expensive unless you have plenty of passengers. The latest transportation mode is the multi cab. Like a long Aussie utility with a solid top, side curtains and seating along both sides. Can all be arranged in Ormoc as they are sold at the local KIA branch whereas Jeepneys are usually freighted from Cebu with a bill of lading etc. If you wish to know more just email me on the hotmail address. I usually look at my emails at least every second day. By the way are you a male or female? Who will be the one to drive your planned vehicle? Route licences and registration are granted by the Bureau of Transportation (BOT) that is why you always see BOT number written on the side of public transport vehicles. By the way, the greedy new Mayor of Ormoc, the young Codilla, has lifted the maximum number of trikes in Ormoc with the result that there are now far too many and as such they are all starving on low income, some are driving 12 hrs a day and only making around 100 pesos a day. The reason I mention this is as a warning for you to check that your route permit is not one of many so that only the popular established drivers get their passengers and you, as the newcomer will be ignored. This is all for now, ask questions and I will try to answer best I can. Take care, Cheers, Henk
