| Adelaide | Moving to Adalaide(places to avoid) please help!! Posted: Thu March 15, 2007 01:29 PM UTC
Hi,
My family and I are moving to Adalaide after alot of travelling and reasearch. We are a young family of 4, two children 2 and 3. We have just arrived back from melbourne, and found this was not the place for us. We have previously been to Perth (mandurah), which we was unsure about, although is a gorgeous place. When we first went to oz we went adelaide and have never forgotten our experience, people, etc... this was supberb. As we have young children its hard to keep going on long flights so could please somebody advise of any place in adalaide we should avoid for any reason, as we will probably only get One more chance to travell before we move and would like to visit the most positive places for our children, eg, schooling, amenities, beaches etc... Thank you for your time Jay |

It depends entirely what you can afford for a home, I would avoid Elizabeth, a satellite city north of Adelaide, and areas 20km south of Adelaide such as Christies Beach, unfortunately these places attract a lot of crime. If you can afford it, the eastern suburbs such as Magill, Burnside, Unley have lovely homes but are naturally a lot more expensive than other areas. Some other nice suburbs are Semaphore, Glenelg, North Haven , these are all beachside,a website called domain.com.au has real estate and perhaps look at that so that you get an idea of house prices. Other areas that are good are St Peters, Payneham,Warradale, Plympton, North Adelaide, Medindie.
I,d actually be inclined to rent if possible when you first get here so that you can find an area you like, it,s a bit late once you have purchased a home. It would also depend on where you will be working as obviously you don,t want to have lengthy trips to work each day.

Actually Elizabeth is a lovely area to live. I have lived there all my life. Never had a days trouble. Yet I have had some one stick their arm through my window to steal my bag in Unley, stepped over drug addicts to get to my dance class in North Adelaide and would not be caught dead walking at night in the Eastern suburbs! Don't believe what people on the other side of town say about the north. There is good and bad in every suburb. Golden Grove which is billed as the "better part of town" has the highest child abuse rate in the state!
I live in Munno Para which is just outside of Gawler. Its peaceful and only a short drive to the hills and wineries. We have large modern shopping malls, good private and public schools, recreational parks and a multicultural community. There are some lovely suburbs in the north. For a new modern area area you might like to take a look at Mawson lakes or at the other end for a more historical home you could try Gawler.

If Hennanights thinks there are no handbag thefts, drug problems, assaults or child abuse in Elizabeth then we are talking about 2 different places - even Police don,t want to work there.
