if you are arriving by ferry/ship, let me know the name of your dock. Depending on which place you dock, you can easily walk to the bus stop and take bus 1 to the train station where you can take the above mentioned train to Florence.
if you dock at Varco Galvani, it's quite far, between Livorno and Tirrenia Beach, so you will have to take a cab to the train station and then a train to Pisa
Please NOTE that cabs are a big rip off here, because they know cruisers have more money than backpackers of course and they will tell you some crazy stories like " hey the dock is outside the center of livorno, so a different fare applies to this route" and many many other stories... so, if you let me know, I can help u better

I saw your reply to someone else, but I also have a similar question. Unfortunately, at this time I do not know which dock. What I would like to do is take a train to Pisa, see the tower, then train to Florence, then train back to Livorno. Is this reasonable to do in 12 hours? The ship is scheduled to dock at 7am and leave at 7pm.

Can you outline the logistics of such an itinerary? Approximate costs?

Reservations for the Tower can be made in advance. Is it advisable to do this so as not to waste time? How much time should be allowed coming from Livorno?

hello you don't need to make a reservation if you want to see the tower. you can just walk to the tower or take the bus from Pisa train station. Pisa train station is only 15 minutes by train from livorno train station.
I would suggest you do pisa quickly in the morning and then take a train to florence from pisa around 10.30 so you will have plenty of time to see a bit of florence.
you can take a train back to livorno around 5pm so you can be at the ship by 7pm
remember to ask your travel agent where your ship will be docking, so that i can give you better tips for how to reach livorno train station from the ship faster.

Thank you for the information... it would help us as well... I need however one more info... When we will arrive by train at Pisa... is it far from the tower (Pisa Train Station to the Pisa Tower)... could we walk it?

Do you have the Pisa Train Station name?

Thank you very much...

hello there
sorry i replied too late but i was in china for work
the walk from pisa centrale (the main train station) to the tower is 15-20 minutes on foot. you can also take a bus from the station to there, but it takes the same time due to traffic.
If you need more help, i remain at your disposal. It's very easy to walkto the tower of pisa, once you are out of the train station, you keep walking straight on until you cross a bridge and then you will ask and anyone will tell you it's 2 minutes on foot from there. the street which leads you to the tower is called Borgo Stretto and the parallel to this one on the left is called via s. maria.

We are arriving in Livorno on May 31 7 AM and leaving at 7 PM. We would like to go to Florence for the day. What is the easiest and cheapest way to get there. Our ship offers transportation to Florence for $77. There are 4 of us. Can we get there any cheaper and without feeling like cattle at the mercy of a large group?
Thanks in advance.

first off... you need to know where your ship is docking. once you know the name of the dock, you have to do this. If it's alto fondale or stazione marittima or porto mediceo you can take bus 1 to the train station (1.5 euro one way and u can buy the ticket on the bus) from via grande (the big shopping street off the port) and then take a train to florence. I meet cruisers every day when i go to work and they mostly take the 9.11 am train to florence (the train ticket is around 12 euros return (www.trenitalia.com)
If your ship is docking at varco galvani, then you'll have to take a cab to the train station (varco galvani is on the way to pisa and not central, which means the industrial side). The cabs will try to rip you off. 4 people to the train station should be around 10 euros one way.

Royal Caribbian were unable to tell me the name of the dock that their ships tie up at however I searched the Port of Livorno web site and read that the cruise ship dock is "Porto Di Livorno 2000" Do you know if this is correct and if so is it an easy walk to the train station or do I need to get a bus?
I have also heard that the trains are not reliable and we could easily miss our ships sailing time. Do you have a comment about this?

your travel agent MUST know where the ship is docking
i have helped hundreds of tourists on vt and they all got the info from their travel agents
porto 2000 is the name of the big port for tourists, but a lot of cruises also dock at the industrial side of the harbour
trains to florence are reliabel when you dock because it is commuter trains only
whereas long distance trains are not reliable at all

if you dock at Stazione Marittima, then u can take bus 1 to the train station
