I have driven many times from riyadh to makkah and madinah. From riyadh to makkah it is 900km. From makkah to madinah it is arond 440km. From madinah to riyadh back it is 800km. The road is very nice. Ony the rest places are not so nice. You can also drive at night.

Hi,
Is it advisable? Well depends on the driver. The thing to bear in mind that most of the highways don't have any street lighting and this can be very scary of you are not used to driving in complete darkness (barring the headlights). The drive to Makkah is not so bad as you would be excited about performing Umrah, but the drive back can be tiring. Therefore I would advise either you travel with someone who can share the driving with you, or alternatively you go with someone else who is also driving. Personnaly I would look to do the drive 1st thing in the morning, just before the morning prayer, and hopefully you might reach makkah by lunch time. Hope this helps... J
