Freiburg im Breisgau Munich to Koln via the Black Forest
Posted: Sun March 11, 2007 03:52 AM UTC
We will be driving from Munich to Koln in one day. I wanted to know if we drive through the Black Forest (North of Freiburg) if we would get to see any of the beauty that is the Black Forest? I know it will increase our drive time by a few hours, but we don't want to miss any of the beautiful things Germany has to offer.

Frankly, if you want to see something, then don't just rush through it.
From Munich to Cologne by car is already a somewhat exhausting trip, and no, you won't see much if you us ethe Black Forest as a drive thru'. An Autobahn is never romantic nor beautiful.

At the very least, you should stay in Freiburg's old town for a couple of hours, relax and have a coffee. Then again, you definitely won't make in only one day. Not that I believe a trip Munich -> Black Forest -> Cologne is "doable" in one day anyway.

Munich to Cologne is 5 hours on the most direct route. That's already a lot for Germany, where you will need your full concentration the whole time on the road.

Scenic and least detour would be to drive through the Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz.

The "thick" road on the left is the autobahn A61.

From: Munich
To: Cologne
Stopover A: Oberwesel
Stopover B: Brey

These stopovers are just to enforce the right route. But a short stop in one of the towns (e.g. Oberwesel) is recommended.
