Lier has a railway station. It is quite easy to get there.
First of all, forget about the Thalys. This train is not convenient for travel from The Netherlands to Belgium. Take on of the hourly IC services Amsterdam - Brussels, and get out in Berchem (which is a suburb of Antwerp). in Berchem there is a train to Lier at least every hour, which takes about 10 minutes. A possible schedule might look like this: +-------------------------+--------+--------+----- | Station | Arr. | Dep. | Train No | Comments | +-------------------------+--------+--------+----- | Amsterdam CS | | 14:26 | IC 637 | | | Antwerpen-Berchem | 16:29 | 16:38 | IR 2916 | | | Lier | 16:48 | | | | +-------------------------+--------+--------+----- All these trains run hourly throughout the day, so you can choose when you want to travel. The railway station in Amsterdam will be able to sell you your ticket and print out the schedule for the next departure. A last hint: Tickets for Belgium can be bought from the domestic ticket windows in Amsterdam CS, and even fro mthe new ticket vending machines. No need to join the long queues at the international ticket office.

I too would advise you to select connections involving IC not THA, but you can select most convenient connection for you by filling in Amsterdam-Centraal and Lier (it will ask you to confirm Lier, no need to change anything just click continue) in here together with your desired date of travel and a rough time: http://www.b-rail.be/int/E/. Total travel time is about 2 1/2 hours.
There are also such things as maps, you know! Lier is about 20km from the centre of Antwerp, in a SW direction and the suburb of Berchem is also on that side of Antwerp.

I agree, forget about the Thalys: too expensive and not much profit in time yet.
Go from Amsterdam to Berchem (Antwerpen), some of the trains might now go directly to Antwerpen Central. Is not really important. From both destinations many trains passing over Lier and stopping there. It will take you about 13 minutes? I am a bit surprised about your destination :) Lier is a nice beautiful little city close to Antwerp and often overlooked. I think that your geography is pretty good.
