| Capri | Best of 1 day in Capri Posted: Mon March 5, 2007 04:06 PM UTC
My fiance and I are planning an Italian honeymoon in April and May and plan to stay in sorrento for 3 nights from May 5 to 8. During this time we plan on taking 3 day trips. One to Pompeii and vesuvius, one drive down Amalfi coast and visit Postiano, and one day in Capri.
We are wondering how our day in Capri should be best utilized. We hear there are some nice hiking trails there, and this sort of thing interests us. We would also like to take the chail lift to the top of the island, or possibly hike up - lift down. We are not interested in shopping on the island (hear it's outrageously priced!), and could possibly do without the Blue grottoes...unless someone convinces us otherwise. Any help would be appreciated. We don't mind squeezing in as much as possible, and plan to get over ealry and stay till the last ferry back. Thanks |

i didn't find too much to do in capri and a whole day may be too much. i did the blue grotto but it was in the afternoon and it was very very busy. if you do get there very early then i think the blue grotto would be a nice trip for you. we hiked up the top...not by choice but just because we couldn't find the chair lift...but it was dissapointing because there are high walls and you cannot get much of a view until you get to the very top...
if you really want to go to capri do so before visiting positano.....we went to positano first and we kept comparing the two..we preferred positano. Enjoy your trip...you will have a blast.

The Sorrento sunflower book describes 7 walks on Capri. Also there are Tourist Information offices at Capri and Anacapri, where you can get an English version map with descriptions and itineraries. We did a picturesque and interesting walk to Villa Jovis (Tiberius' Palace) via the Arco Naturale. Sorrento TI has a simpler leaflet also with itineraries. We found it useful to plan our trip beforehand. It suggests a time of 50 mins to walk down from Mount Solaro to Anacapri. Walking up might be a bit strenuous but the weather in early May should be ideal. Be sure not to be on the last minute for the last ferry. There may be queues for the funicular or bus to take you down to the port.
Best wishes Peter.

We were just there in March-07. Try to get the earliest ferry ride to Capri (12 euro pp one-way). We were there at 8:30 and had to be on the 8:45 because it was full. We followed Rick Steves' itinerary which is to do it backwards (Grotto, Anacapri(chairlift), Capri or hike down to Marina Grande via Phoenician Steps) and avoided much of the crowd. We did the Blue Grotto when we arrived and the crowd wasn't too bad. But it is expensive (totalling 20 euro per person by the time you're done) and the actual ride in the cave is less than 5 minutes. Nice to try once but not again. From here, you can ask the row boat operator to drop you off the nearby dock and take the bus from there to Anacapri (pay on board the bus). You can take the chairlift from there (7 euros) to the top. I'd say that was the highlight of the trip - the views are breathtaking from the top. From here, we hiked down. From Anacapri, we also hiked down the Phoenician Steps to the Marina Grande. At this point, we were tired and just opted for a bottle of wine at one of the resturants by the marina. I recommend getting the Sunflower Hiking Guide to Amalfi Coast by Tippett. One word of caution, some descriptions on this book may have changed by now (i.e. missing staircase, etc). Also, don't be surprised if the trail ends up behind someone's house--that's where the trail is. Also, I highly recommend printing maps from www.giovis.com. His maps were the most detailed we could find. Since you like hiking, you'll avoid much of the crowd. Have fun!
