I have not celebrated Songkran in Hat Yai before. But if it is like any other place in Thailand, then I would think that the main area where the shopping and hotels are would be the center of activity. However, Songkran is typically celebrated everywhere.
So, just be prepared as you walk along any of the roads. You could just have water splashed on you. Take note that sometimes ice cold water is used. Water guns are also normally available for sale before the Songkran and water for refilling is typically available from anyone. Have fun.

Hi Heartache,
If this is your 1st songkran, I suggest experiencing this in Bangkok (if you just want to join in the fun of the 'water wars') and Pattaya; go to Chiang Mai for the culture. This year, Songkran falls on April 13 to 15. The following information relates to BKK only: action will begin on the eve, so get to places like RCA (off Param 9, Phetchburi Road) where you will find large groups of youths having fun throwing and shooting water. The other major place will be Khao San Road (where the backpackers stay). Try to bring your own super soaker (my own gun is a 2500 that shoots water up to 30 meters away) or any other super water guns: there is no fun using a tiny water gun. It also helps with a 'big gun' because you get invited onto pickup trucks with large capacity water barrels. Needless to say, you will be tired pumping water all day long, very soaked and tired...please remember that traffic in that area will be bad so be prepared to stay for awhile. Alternatively, you can just pay a bit more to a tuk tuk and just shoot water while on the road...if only to get you even more excited - just imagine thousands in front of you, all wet, all grinning, everyone has a water gun of sorts and all want to get more wet...its one big party...ha ha enjoy.

I am curious. Is Songkran a water festival? do you celebrate "water"?
