Atlanta Travel Forum

Me and my family are planning on moving to ATL next year. We are black and we have children. Need some "real" folks to let us know where a newlywed couple with children will be safe. I'm not really concerned about me and my husband, but my kids!

I live in Decatur which is just adjacent to Atlanta on the east side and highly recommend it. It is relatively safe and has excellent schools. However, housing is expensive, but if you can handle that, it is a great and very diverse community. If I can help any other way, e-mail me.

Where are you moving from? Your ID doesn't show where you currently live. (mostly trying to figure out what you consider a "normal" cost for housing as that could help determine what areas are in your price range.)

As Rex said, Decatur is pretty good but there are good and bad areas scattered throughout the city. It is tough to paint any general area inside the perimeter with a broad brush. One thing to seriously consider, though, is the school system. While a few of the Atlanta schools are good (and not having kids, I couldn't really tell you which are which), most of them are not of a level that you'd want your kids to try to learn in.

Also, where are you going to be working? Atlanta has some serious traffic issues and that is a very important consideration as well.
