I am planning to visit port harcourt. I want to know wheather the Port harcourt international air port is functioning. Because in 2006 it was close down for repairs and I also want to how is the air port immigration officers treat for tourists. There are so many storeis I heard is that true. Any good hotel accomodation close to Charkin Maritime Safety Centre in port harcourt. How is the transport. Is it safe to travel a lady alone in day time.

thanks

No, PHC airport is not not ready and probably will not be till September 2007 or later. Tourists are uasually treated nicely no worries on that front. It is relatively safe to travel by car in day or night time within the city provided the transport is ordered from your hotel's front desk. I won't attempt to drive any car in the streets of PHC, in that the style of driving is different to the UK standard. Public transport is virtually non-existent, I mean the kind that you will find in any civilised society. A chaufer driven car will cost about N5000/day ie approx £20/day this should be your prefered choice of transportation. There are fairly decent accommodations in PHC at cost not lower than £45/day excluding breakfast and tips for the hotel servant. Your airport taxi driver will more than glad to assist you in this regard but agree costs in Niara before heading for the city- usually N10,000 for such a trip or less.
I hope the above helps.
