Dear Virtourosos,
I am going to Bolivia (Santa Cruz and Camiri) for a week and suffer from an irrational phobia of spiders. Could anyone who has been in Bolivia tell me of the real probabilites of encountering spiders, what kinds of spiders they are, and any possible real risks involved? I am aware of a host of other exciting aspects of visiting Bolivia but would like to allay (or prepare for) these particular prospects ASAP. Thanks! David Finer Stockholm |

Regarding your arachnophobia - you have my emphathy and my sympathy! About Bolivian spiders, you should be aware of the "Pamphobeteus Antinous" (the "Bolivian Blueleg Tarantula"). I somehow do not manage to tell you what I know about it so it might be better for you to search for it in books or in the web. As I said, you HAVE my sympathy!

A Bolivian friend just told me that in Santa Cruz you can find taratulas but not in the town/city but in the countryside. So, if you are going to stay in the farms or anywhere similar, take your precautions.

If your stayng in the city you dot have anything to worry about. I have never seen a spider here in the city, you get the odd small friendly lizard running around the walls but thats about it.
If your going out of the city, Santa Cruz has the Pantanal tothe east and the foothills of the Andes to the west but aslong as your not going to go doing any woodland trekking i would doubt if you would see anything. Also is it me or do we have fewer Mozzies here in Santa Cruz too. :D Have a fun trip. I came here in December (10 months ago) and I am still here.
