Lucky you!
Try the savoury pancakes (with deer or other meat). There are of course dessert pancakes too - in fact, some times the dessert menu is very long :-)))
Fruit booze such as with peach is gorgeous and often served in connection to meals in good restaurants. Then of course Tokaj wine.

Hi welcome to hungary...I assume that you will be in Budapest :)
For the local drink, you should taste the unikum. There are 2 groups of people, one who likes it, and the other who does not like it :) It tastes like medicine. In fact it is prepared from some medicinal herbs. You should find it in any eatery in Hungary.

The pacal sounds good. Looks like tripe is a delicacy in quite a number of countries. In Malaysia we have black pepper tripe soup. Very tasty.

In Poland we suppose that more typical national dishes is Hungary are: halaszle - fish soup; goulash; lecso - mix of wegetables (mostly paprika and tomatoes), meat or sausages. Very popular are langos cakes with cream and garlic sauce. And the most important: everywhere you can buy garlands of paprikas. They are masters in paprika!
The most famous wines are that from cities of Tokaj (tikaji) and Eger (egri bikaver). Also wines from Balaton region are tasty (especially from Badacsony and Balatonfured).

Hi all,
Thanks for all the tips. How about the Gerbeaud pastry. Is it worth the try?

both of them are good!:-) but you know, Gerbaud is for tourists while Europa is much more well known of local people... :-)) if you want to takaway, i recommend Daubner Cukraszda at II. district: at the cross of Szépvölgyi út - Ürömi út - Pusztaszeri út.. it is excellent, but there are a lot of people all the time and no place to sit down...

A nice restaurant in Budapest is the Szaves (Sahz-avesh) which means "100 years" because it's been there at least that long. Good food, reasonable, and gypsy music entertainment.

Hello,
try hungarian national drink pálinka!
It is made of different types of fruits, most commonly of peach (barack), pear (körte, császárkörte) or plum (szilva). At least 40% alcohol, just like in case of vodka or whisky, etc.
It's fabulous! Just be careful with it! ;o)
