It is ar requirment that all guides speak, read and write excellent English. Of course some guides are "better" in the sense of more interesting and pleasanter company, than others....

It's kind of impossible NOT to find a guide at Petra. Ditto that for finding a ride on a donkey, a camel, a horse, a carriage...sigh. I enjoyed my trip there last week, but after two days of fending off all these guys trying to sell me something, I was pretty exhausted.
I can recommend a really fantastic guidebook that I bought in the gift shop of the Crowne Plaza hotel where I stayed: Petra: A Travellers' Guide, by Rosalyn Maqsood. It cost JOD 15, kind of a lot, but it was totally worth it. This book had a superb amount of historical information, very interesting, and also several days' worth of hikes and walks around the whole Petra complex. I did about five of the 11 listed, and it took me two days. The book is really detailed, has good maps and descriptions, and got me off the beaten path in a very nice way. If you don't want to bother with a human guide, and like to know what you're seeing and go at your own pace to the things that really interest you, this book is a godsend.

I know one guide that I can recommend fr0om traveling with him. He has really nice Jeep, drives very carefully, an is simply a nice person. He does guiding inside petra, in the surrounding area (like Wadi Mousa) and orgnizes tours for people alone, for small, and also for big groups all arround Jordan, and especially in places where a0 4*4 viehcle0 is reuired. His contact number is: 00962(0)796873915 Name: Rassan.
Enjoy Joradan
