Isle of Skye Visiting Skye...where is best to stay, getting around
Posted: Mon February 26, 2007 04:15 PM UTC
I am travelling with 3 people in June and was planning to stay in Mallaig for 2 nights. I was going to use one day to travel around Mallaig and another day to travel around Skye.

Are the sights around Mallaig worth seeing compared to Skye?

Is Mallaig the quaint fishing town it is advestised to be and is it worth staying there opposed to Skye?

Are there car rentals in Mallaig or just on Skye? Is there a price difference or is 35 Pounds an expected amount?

I would recommend to stay longer on Skye.
If you travel to Mallaig on the 'Road to the Isles' you have seen a lot of the scenery. We liked Skye very much with its fantastic scenery. Mallaig itself is not that quaint, just a fishing and ferry harbour.
Can't tell you about rental car companies in Mallaig, but I doubt if there is one. I'm sure you will find some on Skye.

We had a B&B in Mallaig (GBP 40,-) as well on Skye (GBP 50,-)

See for more info my Scotland page.
happy travels
Jaap.

I suppose 1 day could be well spent in Mallaig, especially if you plan on visiting the silver sands area around Morar and Arisaig. 1 day for Skye is much too short however and in my opinion you should either spend both days in/around Mallaig or on Skye, especially as the latter is a really large island with surprisingly long distances. The Trotternish peninsula and the Cuillin range on Skye is totally unique. With regard to coastal scenery I'd call it a draw, due to the splendour of Morar/Arisaig.

Mallaig itself -- it is a nice spot IMO, but it is also something of a dead end. I like Portree on Skye better.

I cannot comment on prices as I've found everything up there so goddamn expensive that I've always taken my own car with me.

You could do worse than jump on the Calmac ferry round the Small Isles for a day - they do two runs round all the islands on Saturday (in summer).
No car rentals in Mallaig, try Fort William (45 miles to the east) or Skye itself, which would save you the ferry fare for the car to the island (£££).
