Pompeii HELP
Posted: Sun February 25, 2007 10:08 PM UTC
OK ALL. I have been reading and researching for HOURS. I am traveling to Italy with my Father and his Girlfriend. We are booked with a tour company that arrives in Rome on Sunday 5/20/07. Monday is a guided tour of Rome that does not include evening activities.(free time)All day Tuesday is also a free day. I want to take the train to Naples Monday evening, stay the night so we can get up early and have more time to split between Pompeii (where my Dad wants to go) and the Amalfi Coast (where me and girlfriend want to go) What do we do from Naples? Train or Bus??? If you purchase a bus ticket from Naples to Sorrento, can you get on and off as many times as you want between the 2 locations or do you need multiple tickets? What about on the train?? It is my Dad's 66th birthday that day so I must find a cost effective, time effective solution. Can someone please clear this up for me??? PLEASE!!

There is an old, local commuter train that runs between Naples and Sorrento, and one of the stops before Sorrento is "Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri" where your father will find the Pompei excavations. Takes about 35-40 minutes to get to "Pompei Scavi."

Sorrento is another 20 minutes to the end of the line.

The train ride is relatively inexpensive, on the order of 3 or 4 euros one way, depending on your destination. Not sure about getting on and off at Pompei. You can always buy a ticket from Naples to Pompei Scavi, and then buy a ticket from there to Sorrento when you're ready to leave.

The train leaves every 30 minutes or so. You'll find the Circumvesuviana station in the basement/underground level of the Naples train station (the station is called Napoli Garibaldi, but in essence it's the same physical location as Napoli Centrale, which is the street level station) - just follow the signs to the Circumvesuviana. Get on a train that says the destination is "Sorrento."

You can find the schedules here - select Napoli Garibaldi, Pompei Scavi and Sorrento. http://www.vesuviana.it/Nebula/portal/alias__circu/lang__it-IT/tabID__3337/DesktopDefault.aspx

Note: "Feriale" means weekdays only.

LaCristina has absolutely gotten you from Rome to Sorrento with Pompeii. Should you wish to go further along the Amalfi Coast, SITA busses go from Sorrento to Amalfi via Positano and Priano. Going to Ravello requires an easy bus change in Amalfi. Obviously, leaving Monday late is a bit of a problem, but if possible I would suggest going to the Amalfi Coast for the night rather than spending the night in Naples, and then visit Pompeii on the way back to Rome.

Hi

You are cramming quite a bit in. I would not stay in Naples overnight - I would stay in Positano. That way you do the Amalfi and Pompei in a more relaxed fashion. It's easy to get there and back to Pompeii. Just follow the above instructions. If you need to return to Rome next day spend that morning in Positano then do Pompeii on the way back to Rome. There is a left luggage facility at Pompeii. Dinner suggestion for Positano is the inexpensive Da Costantino. Bookings essential. We stayed in a double room with bathroom at the Brikette Hostel - http://www.brikette.com. Fantastic views, metres to the bus stop and short walk to the restaurant.

LaC - you and Bill McC are the team that has forgotten more about Italy than I have ever learned. Glad to be a supporting player. Did you go back, when are you leaving, etc?
