Euro Cup 2008 questions
Posted: Thu February 22, 2007 04:25 PM UTC
This may be a question(or questions) that is impossible to answer, but...
With the Euro2008 football championship scheduled for 2008 in Switzerland and Austria, what is your opinion regarding how crowded the Berner Oberland will be?
Bear with me, I am an American with limited soccer(football) knowledge.
We vacationed in the Oberland in April 2004, June 2006, and plan on a return in June 2008. We stay around Interlaken.
Will it be too crowded with football fans, and have limited accomodations, for it to be enjoyable during June 2008? I realize Bern is the closest venue to where we stay, and the actual games are spread out over a period of time, but should one expect a large influx in the Interlaken area? Do fans come just for the games, then return to their home/country afterwards? Or is Bern far enough away to not have an impact on the Interlaken-Meiringen area?
Should we just plan on choosing another time?
Thanks for your time.

It's generally not a good idea to travel through a country during a big international football tournament, unless you like football and want to experience the atmosphere. Prices go up, transport gets clogged, hotels get full, etc. It's impossible to say whether a place outside of the main arenas will be affected, it all depends on who is playing where. If any of the big five are playing nearby, especially England, then anywhere within a few hours train ride of that arena will be affected.

Most fans will head for the places where the communication is good to get around to where their team is playing. Travel isn't wonderful around either Austria or Switzerland so don't just expect people to travel in from Italy, Germany or France on the day. English fans wil travel in numbers irrespective of ticket arrangements. Once the major Swiss centres get full the surrounding towns will fill too. The Oberland will be very busy. If you are lucky the big supporting teams will not qualify but don't count on it. Just add up 50,000 fans each from Italy, Germany, France and England. Add 25,000 Spaniards and 25,000 Dutch. And if Denmark, Scotland or Ireland get there the place will be swamped. Absolutely fantastic but a nightmare for ordinary travellers. If there were no rooms in Germany in 2006 how is Switzerland going to manage? I would choose another time unless you want to see what a major tournament brings to town.
