| Lugano | Visiting Switzerland - need a little direction Posted: Wed February 21, 2007 07:36 PM UTC
This will be our second time visiting Switzerland. Absolutely love it there! Our base will be near Interlaken. However, this time I really want to see Ticino, Lugano. I just love with pictures of the palm tress and the lake and mountains.
As we will be traveling there during the day and probably back in the evening, where do you think will be best places to go to see the best scenery, palm tree, lake and mountain combination. I heard there is a botanical garden there. We also love boating, parks, moderate hiking. Thanks so much for any help provided. Thank you! |

Hi,
first one little advice, make sure to stay at least one night in Ticino, the travel time from Interlaken is several hours, I wouldn't do that in one day. Lugano has several beautiful parks an a botanial garden, more here: http://www.lugano-tourism.ch/framework/DesktopDefa That page is giving you also more tipps what to do. Taking boat tours on the lake will allow you to see a lot about the area. Hike/walk to Gandria along the lake shore, it's great. But maybe you consider also to visit an other place in Ticino, Ascona, one of my personal favorits. Fantastic scenery on the lake, lots of steep mountains and some very interesting valleys to hike, mountainbike or explore by car or public bus. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Have fun in Switzerland. Cheers, Peter

Lugano is a truly beautiful place but I agree with Peter when he says you need more than one day there. You mentioned the Botanical Garden and it's spectacular but it's actually about 10km outside the town and it takes a full day to see it properly.
The Gandria walk is the better bet. You can get a bus or a boat from outside the tourist office and walk back along the beautiful lakeside path. Have a look at my Lugano pages for more info. Whatever you decide to do, have a great time in Switzerland.
